Let's say you have $30,000 in debt. The debt settlement company tells you that their fee is 15% of your debt and that they are going to put you on a $200 a month plan. A quick calculation shows that their fee is $4,500. What they don't tell you is that those $200 hard-earned dollars you are paying them every month are not going to your creditors. Instead, all that money is going to the debt settlement company to cover their fee. More tragically, many of these so-called debt settlement companies will not even contact your creditors until you have finished paying their fee, which in this case is almost two years!
